American ephemeris of January 2022: here are several important dates of commemoration in the history of the United States of America!

The Duquesne Spy Ring

– January 2, 1942. 80 years ago, the FBI indicted 33 suspects of spying for Nazi Germany. Nineteen pleaded guilty. They will all be sentenced on January 2 to a total sentence of 300 years in prison. They had been placed at positions to retrieve important information and, in the event of war, where they could engage in sabotage.

A six shot or nothing!

– January 4, 1847. 175 years ago, during the Mexican-American War, the Texas Rangers place an order with a company close to bankruptcy: 1000 revolvers. The Colt brand has since become famous.

Farewell to Humphrey Bogart

– January 14, 1957. 65 years ago Lauren Bacall was widowed. The man of her life, the most talented actor of her generation was taken away far too young by esophageal cancer at the age of 57.

– January 25, 1947. The most famous mobster in the world, "the scarred" Alfonse Capone died 75 years ago, quite young, since he was only 48 years old. The ex-Brooklyn kid and Chicago terror was in a very bad state of health (neurosyphillis, stab in the back in prison etc…) and after pneumonia he succumbed to a heart attack in his Palm Island villa , in Miami Beach. – January 26, 1942. 80 years ago, the first American troops arrived in Europe: 4,508 soldiers of the 34th Infantry Regiment whose ships docked in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Lucky as Luciano

January 26, 1962 – Sixteen years after being expelled from the United States, “godfather of godfathers” Charles “Lucky” Luciano suffers a heart attack in Naples on his way to the airport to pick up a screenplay written about his own life. His body is repatriated to New York. The coffin is followed by 2000 people….

Yerba Buena

January 30, 1847. Yerba Buena means "the good grass" and is the name of a village in California created eleven years earlier by the Mexicans. On this day, 175 years ago, it was renamed “San Francisco”.
