Animal Crossing New Horizons: she asks Nintendo explanations after making this sexist discovery

A seven -year -old girl recently made the buzz on the internet by noting that female and male models of several sets did not cost the same price in the animal crossing game: New Horizons. We take stock of the discovery of this young girl, and what it really is, according to our investigation.

The remark of a young girl who ignites the canvas

A 7 -year -old girl, named Oakley, was playing Animal Crossing: New Horizons when she decided it was high time to buy a new outfit for her character. Her brother had previously bought an outfit for her male character, and while the little girl decided to buy the same in female version, the latter realized that the "girl" outfit was more expensivethat the one "for boy".

The seven -year -old girl, whom this news had taken aback, asked her mother, Ashley, why there was a price difference between the two outfits.

The reaction of the girl's mother

Ashley did not know what to answer her daughter, so that the little girl decided to take matters into her own, by writing a letter to Nintendo. The letter in question, which you can find below, has been massively shared on social networks:

Oakley's mother, contacted by our colleagues from BoredPanda, said:

Ashley, starting from the observation made by her daughter, took the opportunity to evoke the problem of the pink tax, which remains topical for her.The "pink tax", (or, in English, pink tax), designates a price difference between products and services that are intended to destinations of women and, those who are intended for men, to the detriment of consumers. In 2012, in fact, a survey of Forbes magazine made it possible to conclude that being a woman in the United States cost an average of $ 1,400 more than being a man, because of the price policy based on gender marketing.Oakley's mother therefore took the opportunity to make a link between the discovery of her family and the pink tax.

The story of Oakley has already toured the Internet, and many people wanted to salute the critical mind of the little girl, but also her will to understand, born from her feeling of injustice. But then, what about really? Is a male clothing in Animal Crossing: is New Horizons really cheaper than the same model in the female category? We take stock.

Mario and Peach outfits in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Animal Crossing New Horizons : elle demande des explications à Nintendo après avoir fait cette découverte sexiste

First of all, as you can see in Oakley's letter, the little girl's accusations focused on Mario's outfit and the PEACH holding offered to players. It is true, as you will see, that a large price difference oppose them:

At this stage, two hypotheses can be envisaged:

To have a clear heart, we had to dwell on different other outfits.

The investigation carried out by Hitek

Since Oakley's observations focused on the clothes of characters available in March and April 2021, we went to take a look at the side of the sisters of the fairy fingers fingers. If we take "similar" articles, that is to say a "feminine" model and a "male" model of the same range, some articles go in the same direction as what Oakley denounces. For example, the "pretty dream" dress is available for an amount of 2080 bells, while the "pretty dream" sweater is available for 1440 bells.

However, and at first, it should be noted that clothes are not intended for the exclusive use of a sex, in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. In other words, a male character that you play can easily wear female clothes, and vice versa. The fact remains that in fact, in some cases, like that of the "pretty dream" range, the clothes that could be, in our minds, gendered in the male and the feminine, experience price differences. This is due, in our opinion, to the fact that the game lingers on the quality of the garment and not on the genre for which it is intended to fix a price.

If we take the example of the "royal coat", we see that it is available at the price of 6,720 bells (certainly because of the thickness of the fabric, its quality, gilding used, etc.).

To validate this hypothesis, we were interested in other clothes from a specific range.During the month of April 2021, and on the occasion of the "promo ball" event, new outfits were made available to players.Regarding the most expensive outfits specific to this event, we noticed that the tuxedo being was available at 2,880 bells, while the long satin dress was available for an amount of 2,600 bells.

In this specific case, these are the two most expensive objects in the range, and the most expensive of the two is intended for a male audience. For us, ACNH is in no way sexist, in view of this first investigation. It would seem that the price of outfits sold in fairy fingers are indeed directly linked to "quality of a product" (determined by the length of the fabric used, its thickness, and elements that are added), andthat there is therefore not correlation between rising prices and female models offered for sale.Just like for wooden furniture which is cheaper than iron furniture, for example, virtual fabrics could therefore have their own price, and value. For the moment, Nintendo has not however followed Oakley's letter; It will therefore be necessary to wait a little more before having a clean heart.

And you, on your side, what do you think?Have you noticed price differences between a male outfit and a female outfit in ACNH?Do not hesitate to respond to our survey, and if you have some examples in mind, do not hesitate to let us know in the comments space! And if you are a fan of the game, do not hesitate to consult our article concerning all the new features that arrive with the next maj.
