R25 (1984-1992)

Accueil > Gamme>Renault Collection>Un véritable succès.This is how we can qualify the career of the Renault 25, flagship of the diamond of the 80s.Despite difficult beginnings, she will have imposed herself in the very closed circle of large road sedans.By Jean-Marc Renard on 05/13/2009

After the half -shade results of the duo R20 and R30, Renault is forced to put the package to take out a sedan capable of competing the Germans in the "Big Roads" segment, but also to inflict the coup de grace by its aging French competitors, the Peugeot 604 and Citroën CX.It is for these reasons that the R25 had to be a different car from the others and ahead of its time while being practical.Under the leadership of Gaston Juchet, the designers make an original car (thanks in particular to the famous "bubble" rear telescope, dear to the Renault of that time) and whose main strong point is aerodynamics.Indeed, with a low -air penetration coefficient (CX), the R25 was able, while offering high level performance (V6 version and healthy behavior), control its consumption (from 7L to 13L depending on the versions). The practical aspects do not go to the hatch, with a large and bright cabin, a tailgate and a folding bench. The interior is the work of Marcello Gandini (better known for his achievements in Lamborghini or Maserati) and presents a resolutely modern drawing. The equipment will be avant-garde (maybe too because the first R25 will suffer from deplorable reliability) and plethoric, especially on V6 or Baccara versions.

Phase I (1984-1988): "A car to live"

In March 1984 Renault Sorte are new high -end in 3 petrol versions and 2 diesels, with 4 levels of equipment. The range is organized as follows: • TS (standard tourism): petrol basic model, it has the 4 -cylinder 2 engine.0l of 103 horsepower. With a maximum speed of 182 km/h and a consumption at 120km/h of 7.5L/100 km.The equipment is limited, since the management is not assisted and the windows are manual.• TD (diesel tourism): Diesel base model, it has an atmospheric diesel engine 4 cylinders 2.0l of 64 horsepower.Despite a rather bad weight/power ratio, it is pleasant to drive and can reach 155km/h at top speed. It is especially reliable and only consumes 7.1L/100 to 120 km/h.The equipment is the same as on the ts.• GTS and GTD (Standard Grand Tourism and Grand Tourism Diesel): the GTS has the same engine as the TS and the GTD the same as TD.Only the equipment is enriched with a power steering, before electric windows and the centralized locking of the doors.• GTX (Luxury Grand Tourism): high -end model, it has a 2 engine.2L 4 -cylinder petrol developing 123 horsepower. The maximum speed is raised to 193km/h and consumption remains reasonable at 7.9L/100 to 120 km/h.The equipment is enriched with a vocal synthesis, the on -board computer, the condemnation of the distance doors, alloys, a leather steering wheel, integrated rear head support and a bodywork bodywork.• Turbo diesel: it is actually the same engine as TD but supercharged by a turbo and which carries the power to 85 horsepower. The maximum speed increases to 172km/h and consumption drops to 6.9L/100 km at 120km/h.The equipment is the same as on the GTX, apart from the on -board computer which is no longer in series.• V6 injection: high -end version animated by a V6 2.6L of 144 horsepower. The maximum speed is 201km/h and consumption fly to 8.9L/100 to 120km/h.The equipment becomes abundant and expands, with among other things, the 4 electric windows, a central armrest, electrically adjustable seats, the electrical closing assistance of the trunk, a rear reading spot, etc..… • Turbo DX: High -end Diesel, the engine remains the same as on the Turbo Diesel but the equipment is put at the V6 injection.

Thanks to a range that is both accessible in low -end but also luxurious version, to known engines, and to complete equipment, the R25 receives a good reception of journalists, but the reliability concerns during the first 3 years of its marketingwill penalize it (just like a certain Laguna II ...).However, Renault continues to improve its range.

La R25 V6 Turbo

R25 (1984-1992)

In 1985, the R25 V6 Turbo released. The equipment is the same as on the V6 injection except the appearance of the 4x20w hi-fi channel, but the engine 2.5 now develops 182 horsepower and the top speed reaches 228hm/h!

The R25 is available in limousine version

That same year saw the appearance of the limousine version, available on the basis of the two petrol v6s and the turbo dx.Made by Heuliez and targeting the Citroën CX Prestige, it is elongated by 23cm, for the benefit of the rear passengers. The latter have a cigarette lighter and an ashtray in each door, a armrest block grouping numerous orders such as electric windows, neon lighting or the condemnation of the doors of the doors. An "executive pack" option will make it possible to reach the luxury luxury with two individual rear seats with electric control, a central armrest acting as a console and a storage space for hand luggage behind the rear seats. Finally, the driver has a cruise control.

This version is launched on the initiative of the President of the Republic of the time, François Mitterrand and will be mainly intended for public administrations. It will only be produced in approximately 800 copies and its marketing will end in June 1986.In 1987, the TX version (luxury tourism) appeared. It takes up the TS and GTS engine while improving the power that reaches 118 horsepower, the top speed is 195km/h.Compared to the GTS, it can have an optional air conditioning.Engine power 2.2 from the GTX goes from 123 to 126 horsepower. The engine of the V6 injection is replaced by the new V6 PRV (Peugeot Renault Volvo) 2 engine.8 of 160 horsepower. In June 1988, the R25 Phase I withdrew, it is phase II which will ensure the next generation in the face of novelties.

Phase II (1988-1992): "Consecration"

Pub Renault pour la R25 Phase II

It was in June 1988 that Renault, to relaunch its large sedan who will have to face all new French competitors the following year (the Peugeot 605 and Citroën XM), launches the R25 Phase II.For this, the R25 undergoes a rather substantial restyling which strongly modernizes the line. The range does not benefit from any reshuffle and therefore, the equipment levels and the engines remain the same. However, the manufacturing quality leaps forward.

The new luxury claw: Baccara

R25 Baccara

Since stopping limousine production, there is no more high -end version of the R25.This lack is corrected by the appearance in 1989, of the Baccara name. This version, available on the V6 injection and also in automatic gearbox. It is characterized by a very refined interior atmosphere and still enriched equipment: leather upholstery, 3 memories on the electric seats, Orme magnifying glass on the gear lever and door baguettes, air conditioning and the famous clothing cover inleather under the rear shelf.

The same year came the appearance of two new versions: TI and TXI.They take up the engine of the 2.0L TX but in a modernized version with a power brought to 140 horsepower. The TXI presents the equipment of the GTX enriched with brake discs at the rear and fog lights at the front. The TXI version actually appeared to gradually replace the GTX.Indeed, the latter with an engine of more than 2.0l It is forced to equip itself with a catalyst that strikes performance, power going from 126 to 110 horsepower. It is also because of the appearance of the catalyst that the power of the injection v6 goes to 153 horsepower.

La ligne est plus moderne, l'arrière aussi avec des feux fumés

The year 1990 is marked by a profound change in the range. As expected, the GTX disappears completely in favor of the TXI which becomes the first French engine under the 2.0L equipped with a catalyst. The latter, thanks to the talent of Renault engineers will only see its power decrease by 4 horses. In addition, are equipment mode on the V6 injection version. At the same time, the Turbo V6 is reworked in depth to develop 205 horsepower. In April, Renault reorganizes the range of its large road according to 3 levels of equipment: comfort, luxury and Baccara. The equipment is growing generally and TS and TD versions are bowing. In February 1992, after 8 years of production, the 779,687th R25 left the Sandouville factory. In sales/year ratio, it was the greatest success of the high -end French with an average of almost 100.000 vehicles per year.

Anecdote: Renault 25 was often associated with the socialist power of the time.It was the service car of all left-wing politicians during this period and was over-represented in relation to its competitors in the ministries, the embassies, etc....We thus had during this period mentioned the "gang of R25" to designate socialist officials.
