A new festival at the Faculty of Music

Programming Highlights: Create, Discover, Collaborate

This festival bears witness to the Faculty of Music's commitment to research-creation and the crossover of the various disciplines taught, two foundations that are part of the very signature of the Université de Montréal. And this is the common thread of an eclectic program bringing together teachers, students, but also graduates and organizations in residence. From one activity to another, you will be able to enjoy several musical genres, creations and innovative concerts that highlight the effervescence of the faculty community.

Putting percussion in the spotlight, the concert Point de fusion will kick off the festival: the Sixtrum ensemble (in residence at the Faculty of Music) and the Evergreen Club Contemporary Gamelan from Toronto will merge in student creations, teaching staff and graduates of the Faculty of Music. Students from the UdeM Percussion Workshop will also take part in this activity, which will be followed by two concerts in Toronto, an opportunity to promote the festival outside Montreal.

At a concert given by the Ensemble de musique contemporaine de l'UdeM and the Andara quartet (also in residence at the faculty), the public will be able to learn about graphic scores, presented on a big screen. This will be an opportunity to discover the Claude-Champagne room from another angle thanks to a play of light and projections interacting with the music and the movements of the performers.

Dance and creative music will unite during an evening around the interdisciplinary projects carried out during the seminar Composing and interpreting music for dance, by Ana Sokolovic.

Jazz will not be outdone and will allow you to hear, during the Intemporal concert, the winning works of the 1st Sophie Desmarais International Composition Competition for large jazz ensemble with the Orchester national de jazz de Montréal (Ensemble in residence). and the UdeM Big Band. The Improvisation Workshop and the Jazz Chamber Orchestra will work together for a concert to play the music of a former graduate of the faculty, Benoît Charest – the creator of the music of Les Triplettes de Belleville.

Classical music, opera and baroque music will also be honoured: with the Organ, voice and devotion concert, the Baroque Music Workshop will devote an evening to sacred music; The astonishing chamber musicians will offer a musical escapade in Russia and Latin America as well as works by Schubert on the saxophone; there will also be two evenings of classical music with Les profs de l'UdeM, who will play Beethoven, Schumann and Piazzolla, then Mozart, Glinka and Britten with the Andara quartet; and great opera arias interpreted by the students of the Atelier d'Opéra.

This first indoor festival will close with a bang, as the Orchester de l'Université de Montréal will present Brahms' masterful Symphony No. 1 and two creations: one by Robert Normandeau, for orchestra and immersive high-end dome speakers, and the other by Myriam Boucher and Dominic Thibault, which will offer a spatialized sound and visual experience based around Brahms' symphony.

The concerts take place in the Salle Claude-Champagne, except for that of the Atelier de musique baroque, which can be attended at the Immaculée-Conception church.

The Faculty of Music Festival will return in the next few years. The appointment is now made. Mark your calendars!
