AirTag: more than a year of autonomy thanks to a CR2032 battery | iGeneration

The AirTag, this object tracker finally presented by Apple this evening, will offer an autonomy of "more than a year" according to its product sheet. It's average for the category, but the good news above all is that the power is supplied by a CR2032 battery, a standard that can be found very easily and cheaply. This pack of 5 is sold by Amazon around €4, to give you an example.AirTag: over a year of battery life using a CR2032 battery | iGeneration AirTag: more than a year of autonomy thanks to a CR2032 battery | iGeneration

Apple also specifies that the replacement can be carried out by the user, without any specific tool. Clearly, it will not be necessary to go to the Apple Store every year to get a new battery or, worse, to get a new AirTag. You can replace the item yourself and the associated iPhone will alert you when the time is right.

The battery life estimated at more than a year was calculated by Apple according to this protocol: “The battery life is based on daily use including four sound emission requests and one Precise Location request per day. ". That's pretty high usage, so the battery might last longer if you don't need to locate the AirTag as often. It will have to be verified on long-term tests, but the possibility of replacing the battery yourself is in any case an excellent thing.

By the way, the AirTag is IP67 certified, which should enable it to resist almost all circumstances, including total immersion, up to 1 meter deep for thirty minutes. Apple reports, however, that this initial resistance can drop over time, perhaps by replacing the battery.
