Clothing: why French brands manufacture in Portugal

Do you have a shirt or dress made in Portugal in your dressing room? If not, maybe it won't be long. In a workshop in Guimarães, in the north of the country, we sew, we cut, we assemble at a frantic pace. The order book is always full. Here, all the workers receive the Portuguese minimum wage: 775 euros gross monthly. It's much less than in France, Spain or Italy, but the ready-to-wear brands don't just come here looking for cheap labour. They are looking for a guarantee of quality, now coupled with cutting-edge technologies. A machine, for example, cuts fabrics using a laser to the nearest millimeter. If the workshop has been able to afford to buy revolutionary tools, it is because business is going well thanks to orders from France. Among the workshop's collaborators are luxury brands or young brands that have launched themselves on the Net. All of them produce unique models. Chrysoline de Gastines launched her ready-to-wear brand in 2014. Since then, she has produced 80% of her collection in Portugal.TF1 | Report J. Garrel, L. Caboche
