Here we are! Initially scheduled in Patagonia, the grand final of the GTWS 2021 will finally be held on an unprecedented route, in El Hierro, Canary Island, recognized as a UNESCO biosphere reserve. After fighting a fierce battle throughout the season, the best trail runners on the planet now have a unique opportunity to double their points in order to win the Golden Trail World Series 2021!

And it is at La Frontera (267 m above sea level), in the heart of the island of El Hierro, that this race, specially designed for the occasion, will begin. The runners will set off on October 16 at 9:00 a.m. on the volcanic slopes of this little-known Canary island towards Jable de Mequena where, at kilometer 5.5, they will reach the highest point of the race (1354 m above sea level). . They will then switch to the eastern flank of the island to reach the ocean and the magnificent beaches at kilometer 14. They will then head north again to reach La Torre (877 m above sea level) at kilometer 22, before to dive again towards the ocean which they will skirt from kilometer 26 to kilometer 28. A final bump will bring them to Valverde (621 m altitude) at kilometer 32, before attacking the last descent towards the finish located at Tameduste, by the ocean.

Who will win the GTWS 2021?

On the women's side:

Before talking about the presents, let's talk about THE great absentee from this final. Currently 4th in the general classification thanks in particular to her superb victory in the Dolomites and her second place in Olla de Nuria, Judith Wyder (Team Salomon/Red Bull, Switzerland) will not start this race in El Hierro due to from an injury that she unfortunately dragged on from Sierre-Zinal. She therefore leaves room for the other girls, led by Maude Mathys (Team Salomon, Switzerland), leader of the general classification and winner of the three races in which she took part (Olla de Nuria, Marathon du Mont-Blanc and Sierre). -Zinal). However, the Swiss will have to be wary of this year's revelation: Nienke Brinkman (Team Salomon, Netherlands). The Dutchwoman made a strong impression by finishing second in Sierre-Zinal, behind Maude Mathys, before winning the CTR in Germany and then Skyrhune in France. Just behind her, Anaïs Sabrié (Team Hoka One One, France) will be keen to keep her place on the podium, or even go for the first two places. Currently 5th in the general classification, 78 points from the lead, Blandine L'Hirondel (Team Hoka One One, France) can also hope to be on the podium. Marcela Vasinova (Team Salomon, Czech Republic) is, for her part, uncertain. Barely back from injury, however, she hopes to be able to defend her chances and enter the top 5 in the absence of Judith Wyder. Behind, it will be necessary to watch girls like Sara Alonso (Team Salomon, Spain), Dani Moreno (Team Hoka One One / Rabbit, United States), Élise Poncet (Team Matryx, France), or Caitlin Fielder (Team Fiedler Fine Art , New Zealand).

On the men's side:

La Frontera hosts GTWS Grand Final 2021!

Like Maude Mathys in the women's category, Stian Angermund (Team Salomon, Norway) enters this grand final undefeated in all the races in which he took part in this GTWS 2021 (Olla de Nuria, Marathon du Mont-Blanc, Dolo Myths Run). The Norwegian also has a comfortable mattress on Bart Przedwojewski (Team Salomon, Poland) second in the standings who is still 50 points behind. In third position we find Davide Magnini (Team Salomon, Italy) whose best result this year is a very good second place, behind Stian, in the Mont-Blanc Marathon. He is followed by Rémi Bonnet (Team Salomon/Red Bull, Switzerland) who also managed to clinch a second place at Olla de Nuria, again behind Stian. Despite two retirements, Elhousine Elazzaoui (Team Salomon, Morocco) was able to count on his self-sacrifice throughout the season to grab the provisional 5th place and now hopes to climb on one of the steps of the podium. In sixth position we find Thibaut Baronian (Team Salomon, France) who has been very consistent this year. After a complicated start to the season, Francesco Puppi (Team Nike Trail, Italy) set the record straight in Germany, where he finished second, and is therefore in 7th place before the final. We will also have to count on boys like Sylvain Cachard (Team Hoka One One, France), Frédéric Tranchand (Team Scott, France) or Jan Margarit Solé (Team La Sportiva, Spain) who was able to snatch a place in the top 10 at the favor of a very fine victory at the Skyrhune. It should also be noted that, even if they do not appear in the top 10, you will have to be wary of boys like Johann Baujard (Team Matryx, France) or Pascal Egli (Team Dynafit, Switzerland) who distinguished themselves at Skyrhune after a complicated start to the season.

With the points doubled and the season coming to an end, the cards are partly reshuffled before this unprecedented grand finale in El Hierro. Will anyone finally be able to bring down Stian Angermund this season? Will Nienke Brinkman manage to dominate Maude Mathys? See you next October 16 at El Hierro to find out!
