Color of the year 2022 by Pantone: Very Peri, or the futuristic mauve

By Fanny Liaux Gasquerelle

Pantone has therefore decided: it is a shade of mauve verging on lavender that will be all the rage in 2022. The opportunity for IDEAT to return to an announced and already approved trend which also reflects the changes in our society.

If Pantone's choices for color of the year are not always convincing, it is clear that "Very Peri" is a shade that is completely in tune with the times.

From fashion to decoration

As a habit that seems to repeat itself, color first dominated the catwalks of Fashion Weeks. From 2018, announcing the fashion of the following year, designers such as Roberto Cavalli or Balmain dared to bring this shade, then decried, up to date. Unflattering for the complexion, too garish or on the contrary bland depending on its shades… Purple is not popular.

However, as Miranda Priesly, the cinematographic avatar of Anna Wintour (the high priestess of fashion, editor-in-chief of US Vogue) rightly says in The Devil Wears Prada, trends are invented in Haute Couture workshops before seducing ready-to-wear. IDEAT could add: and invade our interiors.

So American Vintage got into it with its mohair cuddly toy vest, in line with Sessùn, in pastel shades, and Bash, more adept at bold hues. The behemoths of fast fashion were of course quick to draw, inviting mauve more widely into the street.

Pantone does not seem to be taking a big risk by announcing Very Peri as its color of the year 2022. However, this choice is proving to be perfectly appropriate…

Very Peri: a color created to measure

In an era where renewal takes precedence, motivated by ambient insecurity (health, geopolitics, etc.), Pantone had to strike hard and fair. By creating for the very first time in its history a shade directly crowned color of the year, the firm underlines the evolutions of a society where standards are in full mutation. The growing popularity of gaming and the Metaverse (all virtual worlds connected to the Internet, perceived in augmented reality) are all signs of the importance of digital in everyday life. Thus, Pantone embodies, through Very Peri, a world at the crossroads of the physical and the digital.

“As we evolve in a world subject to change, the choice of Pantone opens up new perspectives and projects a new vision of blue, so familiar and comforting. By encompassing its qualities and marrying them with the more dynamic ones of a rosy purple, Very Peri presents a lively and joyful attitude, which encourages creativity and imagination,” explains Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute.

It is therefore a fresh and futuristic color that is proposed to us to embody 2022, a trend that some decoration brands had already sensed.
