New job: 5 tips to find your place

Have you started a new job? Do you alternate between face-to-face and telework due to the current health situation? It can be difficult to find your place in a team that is not always present in full. How then to find its place? Breathe, the editorial staff gives you 5 tips so that your integration into this new position goes as well as possible for you.

1 - Stay yourself and take it step by step

The key to a good integration, regardless of the place, undoubtedly lies in not "giving yourself a gender". Remaining yourself, while respecting the personality of others, is essential, otherwise you risk playing on several fronts and getting lost.

Know how to be diplomatic when necessary of course, but also dare to assert yourself and fully show your personality. Take it step by step, be patient and rest assured that not getting along with all your colleagues is normal. You can't please everyone, just as not everyone will necessarily please you, don't force yourself.

2 - Do not hesitate to ask for information

It's not showing weakness, absolutely not. Talking, asking for additional information, even help, before and on the day of taking up your post is essential. This will help you see more clearly about the responsibilities and tasks that await you.

Don't forget that your manager, and your colleagues too, are there to help you settle in as calmly as possible. The blur is unpleasant. If you are in doubt, do not stay there, go to your collaborators in order to avoid, in the future, conversations of the type "ah I thought that... he told me that... I don't didn't know because..." which can harm you for not much. As in any relationship, communication is key.

3 - Present yourself well to the team

While remaining yourself, it is important to take care of your first meeting with the team. Your manager is there to integrate you, but it is also up to you to "socialize" with the members of the company. The idea is not to overdo it, to pretend or to force yourself, but for example on the day of your arrival, you can send an introductory email to the whole team or take a brief tour of the offices to greet various people.

Another possibility the morning of your arrival you can come with some pastries, or during your first lunch go with some colleagues to get to know each other. As for a date, the idea is to get to know each other, to sympathize in order to establish a good understanding.

4 - Observe to better integrate

Every business is different. Everyone has their own way of doing, producing or working. Most of the time it's instinctive, it's not written in the company agreement or on a sheet given when you arrive. Especially since sometimes, between the interview and the concrete work, there is a world. It is therefore important to immerse yourself as much as possible in all the methods in place. Observe, analyze and adapt (without forcing yourself) to the company's way of working and communicating.

Like everyone, when you take on a new job, the adaptation time can be more or less long. Do not panic if the first few weeks you do not find your bearings. That doesn't mean it's not the right job. Once again, be yourself, don't put pressure on yourself, take it step by step.

5 - Appreciation at work: a key to integration

The idea? Talk to both your superiors and your colleagues. Taking an interest in your colleagues is one of the keys to good integration. It's not about becoming best friends with everyone, but daring to reach out to them. Asking if they need something first will reveal your altruistic side, for example. When you are interested in someone, the person feels flattered and therefore will create a more "friendly" bond between you.

We must never forget that we all, more or less, need recognition at work. Knowing that our work is really important to the company. Dare to value your colleagues (without abuse, at the risk of seeming sucker), but don't doubt yourself either. You may well not feel up to your new job. This pressure in order not to disappoint your recruiters must however remain "safe". In other words, don't undermine your morale. Tell yourself that if you have been chosen, it means that you are the candidate made for this position. Feel entitled to be where you are. Don't be afraid to express agreement or disagreement.

Now you have all the keys to a successful first day in your new job. It's your turn !
